Meryl Streep and Stephen Sondheim to be among recipients of Presidential Medal of Freedom

She has three Oscars, two Emmys, eight Golden Globes, two BAFTAs, two SAG Awards, seven People’s Choice Awards, the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Kennedy Center Honors among many, many others.

But it turns out there is still a major award or two that Meryl Streep has not yet received.

President Barack Obama announced earlier today that the great star is about to receive one of them: she will be one of nineteen recipients of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The year’s full list of recipients include Tom Brokaw; Ethel Kennedy; Stevie Wonder; composer Stephen Sondheim; choreographer Alvin Ailey; novelist Isabel Allende; civil rights activist and “Freedom Summer” participants James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner; physicist Mildred Dresselhaus; Rep. John Dingell of Michigan; writer and activist Suzan Harjo; Federal judge and former Rep. Abner Mikva of Illinois; Rep. Patsy Takemoto Mink of Hawaii; Rep. Edward Roybal of California; professional golfer Charles Sifford; economist Robert Solow; actress and social activist Marlo Thomas.

In his official statement, President Obama said, “I look forward to presenting these nineteen bold, inspiring Americans with our Nation’s highest civilian honor. From activists who fought for change to artists who explored the furthest reaches of our imagination; from scientists who kept America on the cutting edge to public servants who help write new chapters in our American story, these citizens have made extraordinary contributions to our country and the world.”

The awards will be presented at the White House on November 24.
