Meryl Streep adds to her own record with 18th Oscar nomination – this time for “August: Osage County”
The Oscar nominations have just been announced (I’ll post full list next) and I was not at all sure that the magic Meryl Streep would make the cut for her delicious turn as a monstrous mother in August: Osage County.
But she did!
The three-time Oscar winner has now been nominated for an Academy Award an astounding, and historic, 18 times!
She will not win a fourth this year as Cate Blanchett should and will win for Blue Jasmine – one of the best performances I’ve seen this or any year. Blanchett already has a supporting actress Oscar for The Aviator.
Others in the category are two other previous Oscar winners: Judi Dench (Philomena) and Sandra Bullock (Gravity) as well as Amy Adams (American Hustle) who received her fifth nomination but first as best actress.
Missing the cut was Emma Thompson who I felt certain would be nominated for Saving Mr. Banks.
As for Miss Streep, I’m so glad she won two years ago for The Iron Lady and got the monkey off her back after not winning for 30 years. She can just relax and enjoy the whole thing this year.
Her previous wins were for The Iron Lady, Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs. Kramer.
Miss Streep’s other nominations were for The Deer Hunter, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Silkwood, Out of Africa, A Cry in the Dark, Ironweed, Postcards From the Edge, One True Thing, Music of the Heart, The Bridges of Madison County, Adaptation, The Devil Wears Prada, Doubt, and Julie & Julia.

Meryl was definitely going to be a nominee for her wonderful performance this year. It is Cate Blanchett’s year. Meryl and Cate are two of the best actresses of all times, so Cate needs to catch up a bit Oscar-wise. I sure would love to see the two of them in a movie together.
