Gee, Greg, this appeals to me. It usually takes an age for any publication to finally reach us here in South Africa, but I shall approach my local bookshop to try to expedite. I already said Dustin Lance Black’s memoir was quite brilliant and last night I put down Rupert Everett’s memoir of his passionate involvement in the making of his movie on the last days of Oscar Wilde. It was a really bad movie, but his book is sheer brilliance…what a writer, so darn honest and affecting. It’s called ‘To The End Of The World’….Travels With Oscar Wilde.
Rupert made the somewhat fatal mistake of writing the script, producing the film, directing and acting in it. He all but saw his ass doing it. And the film didn’t work – for one, the once-gorgeous Rupert looked so hideous as Wilde that you didn’t want to see him. And the intimacy required between the characters was not there. ‘The Happy Prince’ bombed totally in my estimation and I feel so sorry for Rupert, who was clearly pushed to outer limits at every level.
Anyway, the book is quite brilliant, so let’s try to help him restore some funds by acquiring it. He’s a writer of note.
Do get Dustin Lance Black’s ‘Mama’s Boy’ too. Deeply affecting. Another good writer. And a man of substance, for sure.
Best wishes from Johannesburg to you and all your readers…
