Max Greenfield on gay roles and gay fans

Max Greenfield isn’t gay but he’s sure been gay on television – repeatedly.
One of the stars of the Fox sitcom New Girl, Max has developed a loyal gay following that started with his gay roles on the ABC Family series Greek and the ABC sitcom Happy Endings.
‘Paul James and I on Greek had the first gay kiss on ABC Family, and we went to the GLAAD Awards and everything,’ Greenfield tells the Advocate in an interview posted earlier today
‘It means a lot, because you guys have the best taste. Listen, if the gay community thinks you’re doing a good job, you’re in. I don’t think anything gets done in this business without the gay community – at least not anything good.’
Greenfield is game for more gay roles should they come along and already has one in mind.
‘I’d actually love to play Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon now that it’s being adapted for Broadway,’ he says. ‘People don’t talk about that movie that much, but it’s really a beautiful gay love story.’
The 1975 film starred Al Pacino as a man who attempts to rob a bank to help pay for sexual reassignment surgery for his lover played by Chris Sarandon.
So who would Max like to see in the Sarandon role?
‘Ray Romano,’ he says.
Before Greek, Happy Endings and New Girl, Max made his television debut in the MTV series Undressed which required many of its cast members to show plenty of skin and often be sexually fluid.
He feels this set the tone for a very queer, half-naked career.
‘But you know what? I feel like my best naked work and my best gay work is ahead of me.’
