Matthew Mitcham wins bronze, competing for two more diving medals at world championships

Even if Australian diver Matthew Mitcham had not won a gold medal in the 10m platform at last summer’s summer Olympics in China, he would be a hero for having the guts to be the only openly gay athlete competing in the games.

Now he’s in Rome competing in the world championships and won the bonze medal in a new event for him: the men’s 1m springboard. In the 10m prelims earlier Monday, he delivered the highest score with a 102.60-point dive with his sixth and final attempt the only diver in the field to post a 100-point plus score.

“I am surprised how well I’m doing,” Mitcham told the press.

The 10m semifinals and finals are later today. He will also in the 3m event so his hopes are alive to take home three medals in all.
