Out actor Matt Doyle earned the Tony Award tonight for his show-stopping turn as Jaime in Company. His portrayal of a reluctant gay groom is highlighted by a rendition of the frantic Not Getting Married Today.

Doyle thanked the show’s creator Stephen Sondheim who died just as the show relaunched in previews after a nearly two-year delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Stephen, thank you for allowing your work to evolve and allowing more people to be seen in your genius,” Doyle said. “Thank you so much. I’m the next bride!”

This was the first Tony Award nomination and win for Doyle, who has previously appeared on Broadway in War Horse, The Book of Mormon, Spring Awakening and Bye, Bye Birdie.
