Martina Navratilova on Dancing With the Stars: “I’m absolutely terrified but I love it at the same time”
Martina Navratilova was fearless in winning a record nine Wimbledon singles titles during her tennis career but her participation in the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars has her a little scared.
“I’m absolutely terrified but I love it at the same time,” Navratilova, 55, told OnTheRedCarpet.com. “So, you know, you’ve got to embrace it and rise to new challenges.”
“We all have our fears and mine has been trying to conquer them” Martina added. “I was afraid to fly, so I got a pilot’s license. I was afraid to drown, so I got a diving license. One of my worst experiences was dancing. When I was 14 years old and my mother dressed me up and I felt so out of place. I’m like ‘I got to conquer that too,’ and [dancing pro] Tony Dovolani is going to help me do that.”
Martina said being an athlete might give her an advantage in the ballroom when it comes to the physicality of dance.
“I think the biggest advantages for athletes is that we really know what every body part is doing at any given moment because you had to train that technique for whatever your sport is,” she said. “So even though dancing is completely open and tennis is completely closed, it still is muscle memory. So athletes do have an advantage in that we’ve been practicing that all of our lives.”

I am wishing for all success to Martina. She has been one of my favorite stars as I was growing up with her and Chris Evert (not literally, we’re all about the same age). (No offense, Martina, but I always rooted for Chris!) Whenever I’ve seen her on TV, she has always been the perfect lady…charming, polite, intelligent, witty. She has had an amazing career, on and off the courts. Her strengths should get her to the end of the competition. And Tony Dovolani is one talented hot-hot-hot guy, so together they will do great. I’ll be watching every episode of DWTS only because Martina is on it. Let’s hope that the prejudiced America sector puts their anti-gay biases aside and votes for her prowess on the dance floor. Sorry Chris…I’m rooting 100% for Martina on the DWTS court!!
