Marriage tweets from David Archuleta have “American Idol” alum apologizing – and explaining

Controversy was the furthest thing away from David Archuleta when as a high school teen he sang his way to a runner-up finish during seven season of American Idol.

But over the weekend Archuleta found himself in hot water on social media after he posted a pair of tweets that were seen by many as his saying that gay couples could never achieve real love.

The tweets read in part that ‘love is nourished by the coming of children, who spring from the fountain of love expressed between a man and woman in marriage.’

Archuleta, now 24, is a staunch Mormon who took a two-year hiatus from his music career to be a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile.

Openly gay blogger Perez Hilton, no stranger to controversy himself, was among those who replied on Twitter to Archuleta.

Hilton wrote: ‘And what about all the Mormons with multiple wives? They have extra love, right?’

Archuleta has since sent out an apology and clarification.

‘I apologize if I have offended anyone with the quote I sent out Saturday,’ he writes. ‘I guess I didn’t think about the line “expressed between a man and a woman in marriage” being stressed when the whole quote didn’t fit in just 1 tweet.

‘I am sorry my intentions were misunderstood, as my main focus was that too often romance is looked at as the end-all when there is so much more. The bonds that can be there within a family and raising kids, as that is the most valuable thing I have: my family.’

Archuleta added: ‘I do hope however, that whoever may have been offended may know I respect everyone’s freedom to believe and live as they choose. I hope others can respect what I value most in my life as well. Again, I’m sorry and please forgive me if I offended you.’

Archuleta finished behind winner David Cook on American Idol in 2008. He continues to record with his sixth album, No Matter How Far released in 2013.

6 Remarks

  1. Another non-apology, apology. What’s the matter David, do staunch Mormon’s not know how to properly apologize for your bigotry?

    K. Martinez says:

I can’t really get worked up over this. People are going to believe and think what they want and what most celebs tweet on Twitter is horseshit anyway. As long as non-discrimination and equality for LGBT people is the law and church and state are separate, that’s what matters to me.

  3. Wow David has a huge gay following, big mistake.

  4. Bless his heart. One day he will fall in love and bust the hinges off of his closet door.

  5. I’m surprised David hasn’t come out already.

  6. I could not be offended by someone that has been so brainwashed and dominated by his father that the only things he expresses are imitations of what he was told, and therefore are half chewed things of things said by people who already sustain rationally empty notions and indoctrination intended phrases. I hope some day his brain wakes up to form his own thoughts away from religious doctrines.
