Maria Sharapova makes French Open final for the first time in her career and reclaims #1 ranking

Maria Sharapova is number one in the world again!

It’s been a long road back for the sport’s glamour girl who was ranked number one back in 2008 then suffered serious shoulder injuries that required surgery.

Now 25, Sharapova has been coming on strong for the past 12 months and in today’s semifinals of the French Open, she beat reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets to advance to the finals against 21st ranked Sara Errani who has been the hottest player on clay this season with three tournament victories.

If she were to win the title, she would become one of six women during the open era (post-1968) to have completed a career grand slam by winning all four major titles. The others are Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King and Margaret Court.

Sharapova was the 2004 Wimbledon champion, the 2006 US Open champion and won the Australian Open in 2008. She was runner-up at Wimbledon last year and at the Australian Open in January.

One Remark

  1. Good for Maria! She’s worked very hard to get back on top but I hope she realizes she hasn’t won as yet. Sara Errani has nothing to lose and is playing the best tennis of her life on her favorite surface-Maria should not take her lightly.
