Margaret Cho on her North Korean Globes gag: ‘I’m actually the only one in the world who can make these jokes’

Margaret Cho is defending herself on social media against critics who found her running gag as a North Korean journalist at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards to be racist.

Cho took to social media to say to her critics: ‘Oh I think they don’t understand I’m of mixed North and South Korean descent. I’m actually the only one in the world who can make these jokes. The rest are in labor camps. Sorry – you imprison my people – you get made fun of by me. ‪#‎freespeech‬’

Margaret first appeared during Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s monologue in character as a correspondent for Movies Wow Magazine who also happened to be a North Korean General.

Sitting stone-faced, Cho’s character insisted her photo be taken with Meryl Steeep and they were photobombed by nominee Benedict Cumberbatch.

The gag mocked North Korea’s objection to the film The Interview which is said to be connected to the massive cyber attack on Sony, the studio that released the film.

Cho wrote on Twitter: ‘I’m not playing the race card. I’m playing the rice card. #hatersgonwait #winnersgonpun.’

One Remark

  1. I’m not getting the whole racism issue with Cho’s routine. She’s wearing an uniform -she’s obviously poking fun at North Korea and it’s politics. To me, calling attention to her ethnicity rather than the intent of her comedy seems to be more racist in nature. I wonder if people who are crying racist -really realize they are the ones with the problem.
