Lunch Break Videos: Remembering the beloved Karen Carpenter on the 30th anniversary of her early death

It’s been 30 years since the most golden voice in pop music left our world, but love for Karen Carpenter remains alive in our hearts.
I grew up, a gay little boy, listening to her records – they just spoke to me.
So when she died on February 4, 1983, I was numb for days.
In the decades since, we’ve learned a lot about Karen’s troubles, her anorexia, her depression, her sad marriage.
I was unaware of all of this when I’d see her on television because before she got too painfully thin, she seemed happy and funny and really on top of the world.
Here are a few clips from a 1976 ABC special I remember well. It was the very first in a series of TV specials Karen and her brother Richard did and I convinced my entire family to watch it with me.
Nice memory of a gorgeous talent who left us much too soon.
