Lunch Break Video: When Bette Midler dazzled Johnny Carson – and us – as final “Tonight Show” guest
Wow.
Just watching these videos of the second-to-the-last Tonight Show gives me a little tingle. This is the last night that Johnny Carson would have any guests as he ended his 30 year run as the king of late night.
He could not have chosen better than Bette Midler who was at her absolute best throughout the show giving Carson a wonderful sendoff. She even won an Emmy for her appearance!
Here are some of the most memorable moments from that night in May of 1992.

Mark says:
If that doesn’t put a lump in your throat, you must be dead.
Uber-mega-kudos for Bette, knowing just when to leave the stage.
Spectacular. All the more affecting for the memories. That is old-school showbiz coming to an end.
We will all be the lesser for the lack of it.
Mort says:
Thank you Greg. Ditto what Mark said.
Bill says:
Thank you so much. That last song always brings me to tears. That was the classiest ending to any show I have ever seen. I remember seeing it the night it happened, and I was in tears then. Now years later I am still in tears.
