Lunch Break Video: Scary footage of the real “Mommie Dearest” Joan Crawford
Look, I know Joan Crawford has been dead for more than 30 years now and can’t hurt anyone but the woman still scares the hell outa me!
When people say that Faye Dunaway was way over the top in her portrayal of Crawford in the 1981 camp classic Mommie Dearest, then watch these videos and you will see that Dunaway was spot on.
Both these clips are from Crawford’s later years when, according to her adopted daughter Christina Crawford’s memoir, Mommie Dearest, Joan was hammered a lot of the time – even during public appearances. I read the book as a kid and felt so sorry for Christina. I believed every awful word then, and I believe it now.

The fact that these ladies hated each other so much made Mommie Dearest so believable. Just think if Joan hadn’t dropped out of Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte it would have been round 2. Ms. Crawford would have been kicking Ms. Davis’s ass during that round.

Joan Crawford was a great Hollywood Movie Star. She and her daughter did not hate each other.

Christina Crawford wrote that book to SELL and to sell it she had to make people want to read it. Do I believe Crawford was a great parent? No. But you must remember that Crawford’s 2 daughters after Christopher and Christina deny Christina’s allegations.

I think that she could have been as cruel as Christina portrayed her to be. And the fact that the daughters that deny such allegations could be true, or they could deny it for many reasons. Either being scared themselves, maybe she wasn’t abusive to them. Or they just don’t want her to be put out like that. Either or, it could be just as true as it’s shown.
