Lunch Break Video: Musical Mondays debuts with Bernadette Peters belting out “Rose’s Turn” from “Gypsy”
Many major talents have played Mama Rose in Gypsy both on Broadway and on film including Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Tyne Daly, Rosalind Russell, Bette Midler and, of course, the original: Ethel Merman.
I have the soundtracks for each and every version (yep, I’m gay!) and my favorite performance, musically, next to Merman’s is that of the amazing Bernadette Peters who starred on Broadway in a 2003 revival of the show.
This video is her knockout performance of Rose’s Turn at the Tony Awards that year.
Already a two-time Tony winner, Miss Peters lost the award that year to Marissa Jaret Winokur (Hairspray) but she won over the naysayers who thought she was too petite to triumph in the role.
