Lunch Break Video: Memories of Tony Orlando and Dawn and birthday girl Telma Hopkins
In honor of Telma Hopkins’ 61st birthday, thought it would be fun to share some memories from her Tony Orlando and Dawn days. She was one half of Dawn (the other singer was the lovely Joyce Vincent Wilson) and excelled at the show’s comedy sketches which led to a very successful career in sitcoms including roles on Bosom Buddies, Gimme a Break, Family Matters, Half & Half and Getting By, among others.
During the group’s heady run in the70s, they had huge hits including Tie a Yellow Ribbon, Knock Three Times, Sweet Gypsy Rose, Candida, He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You) and Cupid.
The trio has reunited from time to time including an outdoor concert about three years ago in LA at The Grove. I was so excited and walked over there with my friend James whose musical tastes are more in the Metallica vein. He was in hell as I sang and danced to the great hits but I had a ball.
Happy birthday Telma!

Sweet Gypsy Rose says:
Although I was only 10 years old or so in 1976-77 at the peak of the Tony Orlando and Dawn Show, I was MADLY in love with him. I remember on my 11th birthday all I wanted was Tony Orlando and Dawn records and I got three, which I still have to this day. I am suprised that those old records stool have the grooves left. I played those records to death. To this day I can sing the songs word for word and I still love them. I am also thrilled over the fact that I can see clips of the old variety show on YuTube. I used to watch that show every Wednesday night at 8:00 on CBS channel 2 in New York. I was so tnrilled the night my father came home with our first 25 inch floor model color TV set. Hooray!!! Now I would finally be able to see the color of those gorgeous gowns the girls were wearing!!’ Every time I see old clips of them it just screams the seventies. Am I ever so glad that I was a child of the seventies. People always complain about that time, but not me. I wouldn’t change it for the world!! Good music, great toys, and great TV and music. The good old days!!!
