Lunch Break Video: Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer have a dressing room showdown in “The Women”
They don’t make movies like they used to as we discovered with last year’s terrible remake of the 1939 classic The Women.
So instead of dwelling on that disaster, let’s enjoy a terrific scene from the original between Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. Mommie Dearest played homewrecking shopgirl Crystal Allen who has an affair with the hubby of wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer).
I love this scene when Mary confronts Crystal in the dressing room of a department store and Crawford tells Shearer: “You noble wives and mothers bore the brains out of me … I bet you bore your husband too.”
The classy Shearer got in her licks too: “You’re even more typical than I’d dare hoped.”
The film, directed by George Cukor and based on Claire Boothe Luce’s play of the same name, also stars the fabulous Rosalind Russell, among others. In fact, the entire cast is female – not a single man in sight!
