Lunch Break Video: Dusty Springfield sings her signature tune “Son of a Preacher Man”
I know there are plenty of wonderful younger singers out there but I don’t think anybody matches the likes of the late Dusty Springfield.
I loved her style and so many of her songs – especially Son of a Preacher Man from the classic Dusty in Memphis album.
Her other best-known songs include You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me (video below), The Look of Love, I Only Want to Be With You, Wishin’ and Hopin’, I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself and her later hit with the Pet Shop Boys What Have I Done to Deserve This?.
The great singer was surprisingly candid about her sexuality even at the peak of her success. She told the Evening Standard in 1970: A lot of people say I’m bent, and I’ve heard it so many times that I’ve almost learned to accept it….I know I’m perfectly as capable of being swayed by a girl as by a boy. More and more people feel that way and I don’t see why I shouldn’t.”
Dusty died far too young (one month shy of her 60th birthday in 1999) but we are so fortunate that she left so much memorable music behind for us to continue to enjoy.
She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 10 days after her death.

It’s fantastic that you have promoted Dusty here – a wonderful singer, she was hugely admired across the industry for her talent as well as by many, many fans. A not so happy life, touche, but she left some great recordings – if you haven’t, then do listen to Dusty in Memphis for a truly great LP.
