Lunch Break Video: Birthday girl Whoopi Goldberg teams with Patrick Swayze, wins Oscar for “Ghost”
Whoopi Goldberg does a fine job on The View but you have to wonder if she ever thinks: “What the hell am I doing sitting across from this convervative blond robot Elisabeth Hasselbeck when I could be making movie?”
It seems like ages ago but Whoopi has made a lot of movies and some of them were quite good. There was her Oscar-nominated debut in The Color Purple and other dramatic roles in such films as Clara’s Heart (opposite Neil Patrick Harris!), The Long Walk Home, Ghosts of Mississippi, Boys on the Side and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
But she has been the best in comedies starting with Jumping Jack Flash followed by the hugely successful Sister Act films. She also made a lot of forgettable films but one that no one will ever forget is Ghost.
Whoopi played psychic Oda Mae Brown and really stole every scene she shared with the late Patrick Swayze who was at the peak of his heartthrob days. She became the first African-American actress since Hattie McDaniel won for Gone With the Wind in 1937 to win an Academy Award when she took home the best supporting actress prize in 1991.
Today is Whoopi’s 54th birthday and I thought we’d celebrate with some of her scenes from Ghost. Enjoy!

Who was the handsome man from tv soap on the view Friday? Is he Whoopi’s new man. I like him as Zack on the soap.
