Lunch Break Video: Audra McDonald channels Billie Holiday in this rendition of “God Bless the Child”
The great Audra McDonald has a chance to make Tony Award history next month should she win the best lead actress in a play award for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.
It would be Audra’s sixth Tony win breaking a tie with Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury and would make her the only performer to win Tonys in four different acting categories – lead actress in play/musical and featured actress in play/musical.
She will have some stiff competition that includes past Tony winners Tyne Daly and Cherry Jones but Audra is getting raves for her performance Lanie Robertson’s play about a drug-ravaged nightclub show near the end of Holiday’s tortured life.
Audra performed God Bless the Child this week on The Colbert Report.
See for yourself.
