Lucie Arnaz laments the colorization of ‘I Love Lucy’ episodes that aired on CBS tonight
It seems that at least once or twice a year CBS airs picks a couple of episodes of I Love Lucy, colorizes them, and airs them as a prime time special.
Pretty amazing for a show that’s been off the air for 56 years. It’s that good.
Earlier tonight, the I Love Lucy Superstar Special featured two episodes with movie legend John Wayne guest starring as himself and fans know these are two of the Hollywood episodes and revolve around Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) stealing Wayne’s footprints from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
The daughter of Miss Ball and Desi Arnaz was among those who watched the episodes tonight and Lucie Arnaz was not pleased.
‘I am not sure I can properly explain how AWFUL I feel the “colorizing” is of the I Love Lucy episode I am watching on this CBS Lucy Special tonight,’ she stated on Facebook.
‘Who the hell has hair that color or a guy who has a robe that pink. Why do people today think comedy needs to be a friggin’ cartoon?
‘Sorry prod. wish I had any say on what happens to this legacy.’

If I may…I have loved ILL since I was a kid and it is still hilarious and I watch it often. I am also a fan of vintage advertising, which was the age of over saturation. Colors were very bright and eye catching, so for me these over saturated I Love Lucy episodes look more authentic than they would if they tried to make them look more contemporary.
Just my two cents. Hope to buy these episodes on iTunes 🙂
Paul says:
I agree, the colorization was AWFUL!

I’m a huge fan of B&W in both film and television. Colorization does not add anything in my opinion. If something is good and stood the test of time then you don’t need some gimmick to attract people to watch it.
Tim says:
We all know what Lucy and John Wayne look like on BW TV. No big deal. People bitch about everything. I just sit back and enjoy the show!
Richard V says:
I agree with Lucie about the coloring, I watched in spite of since I didn’t like anything else that was on which is sad… nothing better than what they had some 56 plus years ago. I love Lucy still a classic no matter what they do to it.
Charlie says:
I thought the colorization of the episode was awful. It was still fun to see the episode. I don’t usually go out of my way to see I Love Lucy because I grew up with them, and I feel like I know the episodes backwards and forwards.
Max says:
I think the real sadness here is that audiences today feel that anything in B&W is old and therefore is inferior.
We all know this is not the case. Movies and TV shows that stand the test of time and that are real classics can be in B&W or color. Ya know, B&W is an art form too.
K. Martinez says:
Max, You hit the nail on the head.
Bruce Wayne says:
Yes, some of the color choices seemed a bit extreme…but it was a nice change to see it this way, with more vibrancy and depth. I’m sure there will be plenty of complaints when they do it in 3D or hologram, too.
Technology marches on. Don’t be afraid of new things!

I feel it cheapens the film noir of the tv show
It is like if they colorize Casablanca
