Loved last night’s classic “Furt” episode of “Glee” that included two weddings, a bully and Carol Burnett

Love is in the air: The episode, called Furt, also features the wedding of Finn's mother and Kurt's father

Glee had me reaching for the Kleenex last night. The episode, titled “Furt,” was so good, so emotional, so satisfying.

It dealt with bullying and interwoven was a beautiful wedding and a well-written role for a famous guest star.

Here were some of the highlights for me:

In the wedding reception scene (Kurt’s dad married Finn’s mom) when Finn made a speech about having his brother’s back from now on then sang to him and danced with him, the tears rolled out and didn’t stop until we were well into the commercial break. God it was beautiful.

There were several high other points in the episode which dealt with Kurt being bullied by football player Dave Karofsky (Max Adler) who is gay himself and kissed Kurt a few weeks back.

Says Sue: “Lady, this kid lays a finger on you, you come straight to me and I will expel him faster than a Thai take-out place can read back your delivery order.”

Kurt tells Sue that he doesn’t to be called Lady. She says in a soothing tone: “I’m sorry. I thought that was your name. As an apology, I’ll allow you to choose from the following nicknames: Gelfling, Porcelain or Tickle-Me-Doughface.”

'Glee's' 'Furt' episode has Kurt (Chris Colfer, l.) christening his relationship with Finn (Cory Monteith, r.) as 'Furt.'

Click to view full size imageThe only letdown was his future stepbrother Finn (Cory Monteith) who didn’t step up because he was more concerned with reclaiming his big man in campus stature which is being threatened by newcomer Sam (Chord Overstreet).

The school board overturns Sue’s expulsion of Karofsky and she tendered her resignation as principal in protest of the school board’s decision. She told Kurt she’d keep an eye out for him as she roams the halls: “Someone out to have your back.”

With Karofsky returning, Kurt said: “I don’t feel safe at this school.”

Chris Colfer does a good job of conveying Kurt’s fear and it’s very telling that despite the support of his friends and teachers and family, he feel he must leave the school to feel safe. His dad and stepmom, newly married in this episode, decide to use their honeymoon money to pay for private school and Kurt announces that he was transferring to Dalton Academy where a “zero tolerance no bulllying policy is enforced.”

This was also a strong episode for Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester who has decided to marry herself and that brings her absentee mother to town. The mother, of course, was played by Carol Burnett who really nailed the part – helped by excellent writing. We got to see shades of Sue in the mother and it really made you understand how a personality like Sue comes to be.

Sue also realizes that she had been bullied all of her life by her mother and that was very profound in this superb episode – my favorite so far in a season of many favorites.

3 Remarks

  1. Thank GOD! I thought I was the only one that got emotional last night! I recorded it so I watched it straight again after watching it the first time. So love Carol Burnett.

What got me I think most about the episode was no mater how bad Kurt was feeling about the abuse he was receiving he never OUTED Karofsky he had his opportunity to do so but never did.

Shows no matter that kid sure as hell has GUTS!

  2. I don’t know if Kurt not outing Karofsky showed he had guts. I think he was still terrified that he might try to cary out his threat. I couldn’t help but wish he had outed him right there and then. Put it on the table in front of his father and everyone. Karofsky is in his own kind of hell. They periodically humanize Sue so it’s hard to hate her despite her despicable behavior most of the time. But they’ve shown motivation for her behavior and it’s not just because she’s evil. And they’ve started to do it with Karofsky. Hopefully they have more in store for him. He shouldn’t be and isn’t cartoon evil. He is terrifying because of his secret. It’s making him into a time-bomb. I hope they do redeem him in some small way. Show him actually taking some small step at accepting himself.

  3. The Finn and Kurt dancing scene got me as emotional QAF’s Brian and Justin’s dance at the Prom.
