“Looking” gets cancelled by HBO – will wrap up stories in “final chapter” special

I’m gutted!

HBO confirmed today that Looking will not return for a third season.

The series starring Jonathan Groff, Murray Bartlett, Frankie J. Alvarez and Russell Tovey will, however, get a special to wrap up its storylines.

The network said in a statement: ‘After two years of following Patrick (Groff) and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special. We look forward to sharing this adventure with the shows loyal fans.’

Looking has a loyal fanbase but could not sustain the ratings of its lead in, Girls, on Sunday nights.

I had spoken with several cast members recently who were still hopeful for a third season.

‘If it were based on quality then we definitely deserve a pick up but it’s out of our control,’ Alvarez had said. ‘I’m super proud of the second season and hopefully the powers the be will give us another chance to continue developing stories and living with these beautiful characters we all adore.’

Raul Castillo, who plays Richie, had said: ‘I really hope that we get a season three. I think it would be a great gift to continue to explore these characters – I think we’ve just kind of scratched the surface.’

6 Remarks

  1. As I feared Tovey’s tweet was about the last episode. Terrible decision by HBO but at least they will give us an ending. This show deserved at least one more season to let it grow and find a bigger audience.

  2. Oh,Damn…………my worst fear has come true but there are a few ‘silver linings’ taking place, in my head.
Some of the greatest shows to ever hit the air waves would only have a few seasons originally under their belts.
Then they become cult-classics in reruns and syndication (if that is possible ) and I looked up shows that became hits in syndication after two seasons and all I found was ‘F Troop’, which comes on and is a favorite among my parents, which is really cool. I know that isn’t helping the cause of this show and my point that I’m trying to make.
The fans could scream for ‘Netflix’, ‘HULU’ or even little ‘LOGO’ to attempt to rescue the show. I know LOGO needs a hit but it seems they have ‘Cucumber and Banana’ with some serious buzz happening and not that Looking would be a buzz kill but could actually help make this network even greater with two well-written shows on board.
LOGO is an awesome network but besides all my favorite W&G (Will & Grace) reruns and I can’t leave out ‘Roseanne’ and The Golden Girls, there isn’t too much TV shows.
Of course Ru Paul has his entire catalog of shows on the network and all I can say to that is ‘You Better Work!’
However Ru Paul’s shows are AWESOME but that is more reality TV, we need the next great ‘Sex and The City’ for us LGTBI folks.
What is even a bit odd, is how UK/British TV can launch so many LGTBI inspired TV shows and ‘Queer As Folk’ being one to stick out but it seems that BBC has had a long history of having shows that aren’t candy-coating the ideal that LGTBI people exist and lead somewhat normal lives. I would love to have wrote ‘normal’ but Mi Vida Loca is just an example of how complicated at times the average (not that I am ) LGTBI person’s life is.
Mind you, going ‘across the pond’ is another story when your gay and not that I have been to the UK but I have heard and read some things that aren’t too flattering.
However, they (UK) seem a bit more hip and on board with showcasing LGTBI people’s lives and stories.
Maybe ‘Looking’ can get on board with BBC TV, you never know because stranger things have happen in and on TV.
I do find Looking to be so innovative and the acting is superb and the writing is just on-trend and just amazingly profound and I can’t understand why HBO would back out now.
I know when the viewership isn’t there it can get rough for the show but then I didn’t understand why the viewership wasn’t there either. HBO used to have this little show that could called “OZ”, which wasn’t allegedly a LGTBI show but would end up being a gay favorite. I’m wrong because I think OZ would reach gay cult-classic status in no time and of course because of many of the story lines would weave in and out of many gay situations. I can’t leave out the infamous/famous nude shower scenes by some of the Who’s Who in Hollywood.
Isn’t Russell Tovey but amazing enough to keep people looking? I think so but the entire cast is just amazing and I’m going to miss this show very much. It was pretty amazing how in 1/2 hour you were literally entertained, amazed and even sometime heartbroken but then you couldn’t wait until next week to see what happened. Mind you, I missed all of Season 2 because of not having cable but I was down to even get Netflix for solely ‘Looking’ and ‘OITNB’. Keep your fingers crossed because possibly something could transpire for the good of the show. This might be a ploy to get viewership on board because sometime stores have what is known as “Going Out For Business Sales” and if you read it fast it looks like “Going Out of Business Sale”. Just maybe this is what is happening and I’m only being optimistic and very hopeful.
If there is such a thing called HOPE, maybe Oprah and all her influences could give ‘Looking’ some kind of boost.
Have a sit-down on Queen Oprah’s couch, talking about the show and even give her some kind of part on the show.
Maybe her network needs another hit, I don’t know just brainstorming but I’m a bit heartbroken so my mind starts to wonder.

    Jerry in NYC says:

I JUST WROTE HBO A HEARTFELT LETTER TO BRING BACK “LOOKING” FOR ANOTHER SEASON. LET’S ALL WRITE THEM….YOU NEVER KNOW 🙂

  4. I loved this show! But 30 minutes just doesn’t cut it. As soon as I got into the show, it was over with! The acting was superb! Some of the storylines were fine, but I got tired of the fighting – conflicts developing too early in the relationships. I am seeing enough of that in Days. Please, let’s have some lovin’ goin’ on! It’s less stressful and more fun to watch.

  5. I wrote to HBO only last week pleading for a third season at least.
    Terrible decision.

  6. HBO’s PR department dropped the ball on promoting this show- pardon the pun, looking for a quick hit ala “Queer As Folk.” It was slow and dragged at times, but I felt the characters were just beginning to develop. But I agree, 30 minute shows are just not enough time…that may work with Network TV (and sometimes not), but it wasn’t enough time and as soon as you got into the storyline, the show was over. I hope HBO wraps this up with a 1 hour. “Looking” deserves that much.
