Linda Perry tweets that Lady Gaga didn’t deserve Oscar nod then later tweets an apology

When Lady Gaga got an Oscar nod last week for Til it Happens to You, it’s now clear that music producer Linda Perry was not among those who called with congratulations.

In fact, a few days later Perry took to Twitter to go public with her gripe that Gaga did not deserve to be nominated alongside Diane Warren for Best Original Song for the song about campus rape which is in the documentary The Hunting Ground.

In a rant that has since been deleted from her Twitter account, Perry wrote on Monday: ‘Normally I wouldn’t respond to all this but I don’t know Im feeling spunky. There was another artist that originally was gonna sing #TIHTY. I have Diane’s original demo with her singing. The only line that has been changed “Till you’re at the end, the end of your rope.” Originally was “TIL YOU GOT A HOLE RIPPED IN YOUR SOUL”. So I guess technically one line was changed so sure Gaga possibly “rewrote” a line.’

She added: ‘But chances are Diane still took part in rewriting that line which means Gaga contributed a few words. Is that writing? Not in my book.’

Perry is a respected producer who last year was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has worked with Pink, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Adam Lambert, Celine Dion, James Blunt and Courtney Love, among many others.

Perry speculated that Warren gave Gaga a songwriting credit to help promote the song.

‘Gaga is a very smart business women she knew a song written by Diane Warren Would be up for an Oscar. And you know it’s hard getting music out there and heard. Especially a song from a documentary, so Diane knew If she gave Gaga writing credit it would ensure the support this song needed and deserved. And Gaga knows her power.

‘I’m not putting anyone Or anything down. I’m stating the truth. I credit Diane for writing this song, it is her experience her pain her words.’

Gaga did not respond directly to Perry’s remarks but she did re-tweet a response from Warren who wrote: ‘The song is the result of a special collaboration between myself and Lady Gaga. As Lady Gaga and I have consistently said. Til it Happens To you was inspired by the countless survivors of abuse who need our support and love so they know they’re not alone.’

On the same day that her original tweets appeared, Perry said she was sorry for bringing it all up.

‘My sincere apologies,’ she wrote. ‘I made a mistake to comment. I wasn’t in the room when the
#TIHTY was being written. More importantly, I wish the focus to remain on the great importance of the song and the message of the film.’

Perry is married to talk show host Sara Gilbert and was lead singer for the group 4 Non Blondes.

One Remark

  1. I guess Linda Perry had the uncontrollable urge to be a wet rag on a light socket. And I read Sara Gilbert had to clean up her mess on on this rant.
