Laverne Cox takes red-eye from LA to make first appearance on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’
Laverne Cox presented at the Grammys on Sunday then took a red-eye to NYC so she could make her first appearance ever on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. She’s still walking on air from meeting a pregnant Beyonce who was helped out of her seat to great Cox. ‘Beyonce got up for me!’ Cox said. The actress also elaborated on why she asked the Grammy audience to Google the name Gavin Grim. He’s a 17-year-old transgender teen who next month will make history when his case become the first on transgender rights to go before the US Supreme Court. He sued his school board in Virginia to be able to use the boys bathroom. ‘I felt that people weren’t talking enough about this case … if we lose this our rights could be set back for a really long time.’ She adds: ‘These anti-trans bathroom bills aren’t really about bathrooms. They are about whether trans people have the right to exist in public space. Because if we can’t use public bathrooms we can’t go to school, we can’t work, we can’t go to healthcare facilities. I exist and I have a right to in public space.’ The audience cheered wildly in support. That kind of support is so nice to see!
