Late Night Video: Diana Ross and the Supremes perfom songs from “Funny Girl” on “The Ed Sullivan Show”
The year was 1968 and Diana Ross and the Supremes, as they were called by then, made one of their many appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Only this time, instead of performing their latest pop hits, the did songs from Funny Girl, the Broadway smash that was released as a feature film that year starring Barbra Streisand.
Diana doesn’t have Barbra’s power and range, but she had loads of charm – and Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong look and sound terrific here too.
Enjoy!

How interesting to see live singing in this era of lip-synched performances. Seems Ms. Ross has the same problem I have when performing: Switching stanzas. If there’s a phrase where X comes before Y, I have this very annoying habit of singing Y first and then X. When she got to “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” she did the stanza about “Don’t tell me not to fly” first and then “Don’t tell me not to live” when it’s the other way around. Fortunately, the band just kept up and followed her.

What was the point in saying Diana doesn’t have Barbara’s “power and rang”? Diana Ross may not have Barbara’s vocal range but what Miss Ross does have is 18 number #1 Billboard hits and a title in the Guiness Book of World Records as “THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FEMALE ARTIST OF ALL TIME”. Something that Barbara does not have. So I guess it evens out. Diana Ross is the Best of them all. Articles always find a way to take a jab at Miss Ross or try in some sneaky way to attempt to discredit her abilities. Pure envy and jealousy of the great Miss Diana Ross.
