Larry Kramer gets married in hospital ceremony

A big congratulations to playwright and longtime activist Larry Kramer who married longtime partner David Webster in the intensive care unit of a New York City hospital today.

Larry is there recovering from surgery.

He is, of course, best known for his Tony Award winning play The Normal Heart and for his role as a founder of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) and The Gay Men’s Health Crisis during the height of the AIDS crisis in the US in the 1980s.

The wedding took place at noon at NYU Langone Medical Center where Larry had undergone surgery for a bowel obstruction. It was attended by two dozens friends.

A couple since the 1990s, Larry and David had also dated in the 1970s. The wedding had already been in the works before the hospitalization but was going to take place on the terrace of their Greenwich Village apartment.

David tells The New York Times: ‘I had been traveling when Larry went into the hospital and when I was back and he was able to talk, he told me he had invited 20 people to the I.C.U. for the wedding. So it turned into a little party at his bedside.’

Although same-sex marriage has been legal in New York for more than a year, it was not until the US Supreme Court gutted a key portion of the Defense of Marriage Act last month that the couple decided to tie the knot.
