Kudos to out Emmy winner Cherry Jones!

cherry-jones-24-sarah-paulson-emmy.JPGIt was a big night for Cherry Jones at the Emmys. She won the outstanding supporting actress award for her portrayal of the President of the US on 24.

Miss Jones (pictured with co-star Kiefer Sutherland) is one of the most prominent lesbians in showbiz and originated the role in Doubt that got Meryl Streep an Oscar nod. Cherry won the second of her two Tonys for the Broadway production and now has an Emmy to place alongside those.

When she won the second Tony, she was sitting with girlfriend Sarah Paulson and gave her a big kiss before taking the stage. On Sunday night, she did not mention Paulson so there is some speculation over the state of the relationship. Personally, I got no idea.

But backstage, Miss Jones handled herself with such class and looked absolutely stunning.

“I like television and I didn’t think I would because I’m a very slow study. So I would use each take, and consider that my three-weeks rehearsal and I would always ask if I could be the last one to go because it gave me time to work on what I was doing. I can never be the first take girl. I need to be the last one of the day.”

Jones says filming for season 8 o(episode 10) f the show is underway “in LA and we are pretending it is New York City. … My character is involved in diplomacy (at the United Nations) and Jack Bauer (Sutherland) is not.”

While she’s a veteran of the Tonys, the size of the Emmys was surprising to her: “It’s just all bigger. … I was glad I didn’t have to do a play on that stage. It’s just now dawning on me that there really were probably millions of people around the world watching. I’m a little speechless right now just thinking about that notion.”

Cherry says she is also stunned by the worldwide reach of television and 24. She was approached by fans for a photo while she was visiting the Clinton Presidential Library and asked where they were from: “They were from Rwanda.”

2 Remarks

  1. I thought you might like to know that Dearbhla Walsh, the surprise winnner of Best Director of a Movie/Mini-series for Little Dorrit, is also a lesbian. Her partner, whom she thanked, is Anna Nolan, who’s a successful TV presenter/producer in Ireland and who first came to fame as “the lesbian former nun” on the first series of Big Brother in the UK.

    Love your blog,

    John

  2. They’re still together. Absentminded Cherry forgot to mention Sarah. Check out Sarah Paulson’s twitter page.
