Kirk Cameron on backlash against his anti-gay views: ‘I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect’
It is so interesting how immense the backlash has been against Kirk Cameron in recent days after his remarks that homosexuality is ‘unnatural,’ ‘detrimental,’ and ‘ultimately destructive.’
He’s saying things that are no worse than what Rick Santorum and others have been spewing for some ime now but, somehow, coming out of the mouth of the guy who we loved as Mike Seaver on Growing Pains all those years ago, it just seems worse.
Cameron has finally responded to the outcry against him in a statement to ABC News which reads in part:
‘I spoke as honestly as I could, but some people believe my responses were not loving toward those in the gay community. That is not true. I can assuredly say that it’s my life’s mission to love all people.’
‘I should be able to express moral views on social issues,’ Cameron added, ‘especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years — without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square.’
To read more of what Cameron had to say, GLAAD’s blistering response to it, and about what fellow celebrities like Sara Gilbert and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are saying about him, see my story over at Gay Star News.

K. Martinez says:
If you don’t like it Kirk, TOO BAD!! Deal with it. You expressed your views and we expressed ours. I do think that Mr. Cameron is minor compared to public officials like Rick Santorum and leaders of religious organizations like the Catholic Church. Now they’re crazy-scary.
Mikey M says:
Too late Kirk. You can’t backtrack on this one.
FAEN says:
You can’t call me, my partner, my family, my community unnatural and then call for ‘debating with greater love and respect’ Kirk. That’s just BS.
RichB in PS says:
FAEN – well said, “You can’t call me, my partner, my family, my community unnatural and then call for ‘debating with greater love and respect’ Kirk. …”
Mark Bessenger says:
Typical. Another in the long line of espousers of “Homosexuality is destructive, abnormal, deviant and undeserving of equal rights…but I love gays!” cherry-picking the Bible to justify their hatred and trying to pass themselves off as good Christians. Save it, Kirk.
Why is it that when Kirk spouts intolerance, it’s his first amendment right to do so, but when GLAAD utilizes their first amendment right to rebuke him, they’re attacked for being intolerant?
Oh, and if you aren’t for marriage equality and then deny that you’re homophobic because you “have gay friends”…you’re no friend of theirs.
Michael says:
What a moron you expect respect from us but arent capable of treating us with respect or even like we are human beings just as you are? Hypocrite.
Lexxvs says:
“Take it with love and respect: you are an unnatural, detrimental and destructive being.” Yeah, right. Like being stabbed with a knife while your assassin is smiling at your face. It doesn’t make him kinder but creepier. And it is still called murder.
