Kathy Griffin hits the streets for Vote for Equality

Kathy Griffin is a very funny woman but as you can see in this video, she can also be quite serious when it comes to gay rights. In this video on Advocate.com, she undergoes training and does neighborhood canvassing for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center’s Vote For Equality campaign. Cameras for her hit Bravo series My Life on the D-List also came along of course!

The center trains and prepares people and sends them out in teams – no experience necessary. This post-Prop. 8 effort is not only changing minds, volunteers are gathering valuable data regarding what messages are effective in influencing people. The next voter canvass is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can register at www.voteforequality.org.

“I might have changed one mind,” she says on the video. “There was a 90 year old woman (pictured above) who reminded me a little bit of my mom who’s 89…The more we talked to her, the more she kind of came around …and she said, ‘If I had a child who was gay, I would never want to stop them from being happy.”

TIP: On Saturday night, Kathy is doing a “secret” show at the Center’s Renberg Theatre to raise money for its HIV/AIDS services.  The state and county have slashed funding for our HIV/AIDS services at a time when the need has never been greater.  She hopes to raise $25K and there are still SEVEN seats left (www.lagaycenter.org/kathygriffin)
