Jussie Smollett of “Empire” outed publicly by co-star

On last week’s episode of the Fox breakout hit Empire, the gay character of Jamal Lyon sung his way out of the closet in a dramatic performance.

Now Jussie Smollett, the actor who plays Jamal, is being outed as gay by co-star Malik Yoba.

‘Jussie, he is gay, and he’s very committed to issues around the LGBT community. He and I have a very close relationship,’ Yoba tells Black Film.

But Smollett isn’t saying.

‘I am not willing to confirm or deny anything,’ he said in a recent interview with Sway in the Morning.

‘I live my life…if anyone is looking to put me in a box, then that’s not going to happen. But if you really want to know about me, just watch, because I don’t hide anything. I just don’t choose to talk about my personal life.’

Hmmm.

So if they are such close friends, did Yoba have Smollett’s blessing to speak out like that about him or have they been exchanging some interesting text messages this morning?

3 Remarks

  1. Juicy. Daddy/son lovers? Just buddies? Hmmmmm.

  2. Seem a bit like ‘life intimating art’. Jussie is extremely talented and very handsome, so I don’t think there should be a problem but there has to be personal space and boundaries set up with your personal life. I used to be so against telling anyone’s T and even now I don’t want to be the keeper of someone’s secrets. What normally happens is me being me (open, proud and out), if there is someone that is close with me or hanging out, they are naturally exposed and even when it’s not true, they are found out about. You must know that I feel bad when someone is allegedly suspected of being gay when they are not or when they are. Someone would rather just accuse or just think it because they are hanging out with me and that seems so wrong. In this sensitive case, I think Mr. Yoba was being supportive of his friend, his colleague and that got a bit turned around because possibly it was implied that everyone knew and no knew nothing about Jussie but he is very talented.

If you’re outed accidently just deal with it. You are what you are. And why should someone feel guilty because they outed someone else accidently. There’s no reason to blame a friend who’s free, open and natural. It’s the closeted person who’s living the lie and needs to own it.
