Jon Stewart brilliantly points out to the NFL what a real distraction is – and Michael Sam is not one of them

Michael Sam is not the biggest story in the NFL these days – not even close.
The league’s first openly gay player is now part of the Dallas Cowboy’s practice team and it was less than a month ago that ESPN aired a story about where he took his shower when he was with the St. Louis Rams.
Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, said on Wednesday’s (17 September) show: ‘Remember those days? How scared the NFL was back then, that a gay man would ruin their league? Oh what the NFL wouldn’t do right now for that kind of distraction.’
That is because since then, the pro football league has been rocked with scandal over Baltimore Raven Ray Rice who was initially given just a two game suspension for punching his fiance in the face.
Footage of the incident inside an elevator emerged on TMZ earlier this month which showed the woman, now his wife, knocked out and dragged out of the elevator by the player.
Rice has since been fired and banned from the league but the question now is what did the league know before the TMZ video emerged and when did they know it.
Then this week, it was learned that the NFL benching Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson for just one game due to child abuse allegations involving his 4 year old son.
He was dropped from the team’s roster only after one of the NFL’s biggest sponsors, Anheuser-Busch, protested the mild punishment.
‘How crazy is this?’ Stewart asked.
‘A company that sells alcohol is the moral touchstone of the NFL. Maybe one of the only substances that is proven scientifically to increase the likelihood of domestic abuse. That company is saying to the NFL, "You guys got a real problem here."’
