Johnny Weir: “I am going to skate in the World Championships and then I have to decide how long I want to stay on vacation”

Winter Olympics 2010: Johnny Weir ranks high in the Vancouver style stakesThere are plenty of folks who thought Johnny Weir was robbed last night in the men’s Olympic figure skating competition.

I thought his performance was magnificent but don’t know enough about the sport to quibble. Should be have done more triple toe loops or quads (or whatever they’re called). Was his footwork intricate enough?

Dunno.

My gut feeling after he finished was that he had won himself the bronze but instead he finished sixth. The crowd booed the judges’ scores as too low. I did think some of the other skaters were terrific but I do hope the judges did not have some kind of subconscious homophobia going on there.

The 25-year-old Weir spoke with Yahoo Sports after his performance about his professional future: “I am going to skate in the World Championships and then I have to decide how long I want to stay on vacation,” he said. “In figure skating your body can only last for so long. I can’t be 50 and trying to skate but I can be 50 and be in fashion, so I have to look to my future and what I want to achieve.”

Weir, who gets as much if not more attention for his flamboyant outfits (and use of fur) as he does for his skating wants to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and really learn the basics of fashion from the ground up.

Good luck Johnny!
