Johnny Depp named People’s Sexiest Man Alive!

Hard to quibble with Johnny Depp being named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2009.

He’s so talented and, well, sexy!

I think I would’ve slit my wrists at the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 if A) I weren’t sitting next to Cloris Leachman and B) If Johnny weren’t such a delight as Capt. Jack Sparrow – even though the rest of the movie was a drag.

When I think of all the movies that I have loved him in, you gotta start with Sweeney Todd. I thought he was sensational. Loved him most in that and in the first Pirates of the Caribbean, Chocolat, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Secret Window, Blow and Before Night Falls.

After decades of stardom, the magazine notes that Depp still reigns as Hollywood’s most irresistible iconoclast; as one-of-a-kind as his beloved 15-year-old boots and as smoldering as his favorite Cuban cigars.

His friend, director Bruce Robinson, explained Depp’s appeal this way: “He’s an artist. That’s one of the most attractive things about him, apart from the fact that he’s so incredibly good looking.”

At 46, Depp becomes only the third man (Brad Pitt and George Clooney are the others) to be given the sexiest man alive title twice.  Mel Gibson was the very first to get the title way back in 1988. Since then we’ve had everyone from Matthew McConaughey, Mark Harmon, Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Harry Hamlin, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, John F. Kennedy Jr, Patrick Swayze, Denzel Washington, Ben Affleck and Harrison Ford, among others.
