‘We’ve been together for 20-odd years,’ Barrowman said. ‘When we were married in our eyes is when we signed papers for our first mortgage. That was a lockdown.’

‘At that time, both of us were going, “Oh my God, how are we going to afford this?” Like everybody else, we panicked and we were scared but we knew we were on a journey for the long term.’

While the couple has been together for decades, Barrowman says up until the US Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act last June, Gill was forced to return to the UK every three months.

The couple have homes in Wales and in Palm Springs, California.

‘It changed everything,’ he said of the DOMA ruling.

While gay marriage has returned to California and is legal in 12 other states plus the District of Columbia, Barrowman knows the fight for marriage equality is far from over.

‘It’s our duty as human beings to stand up on that fence and make a decision to back (other states) up,’ he said.

The actor, currently on The CW’s Arrow, also has a message for anyone who thinks being gay is a choice: ‘It doesn’t work that way.’

‘It’s not a choice,’ he said. ‘I live it. I didn’t decide one morning to get up and go, “I’m going to have coffee, eggs, bacon and I’m going to be gay.”‘
