Jim Parsons never hid being gay and was ‘thrilled’ when a reporter finally brought it up
Wouldn’t it be great if every gay star was just waiting for reporters to ask them about their sexuality.
I’ve done it a few times.
Once, I asked Victor Garber and got a big story out of it.
Another time, I asked a cast member of a huge network crime procedural because he had been identified as gay on a red carpet sheet at the GLAAD Awards.
He stammered a bit and said: “I don’t talk about that.”
I felt so sorry for him – he was clearly a little freaked out. I assured him it was his news to share, not mine.
He still has not come out publicly as far as I know.
Anyway, Jim Parsons it turns out would have welcomed such a question had anyone bothered to ask.
Three-time Emmy winner was four years into his relationship with Todd Spiewak when fame hit and he was thrust into the limelight.
Parsons never thought about hiding the fact that he is gay.
‘What happened was that we were very fortunate with the show, and we started getting invited to awards shows and stuff. I had to deal with it very quickly – I mean, there was no option. I was going to take Todd. And so I had to deal with it,’ Parsons tells SiriusXM Progress.
But no one asked.
‘This went on for years.’ Parsons said.
That is until 2011 when he was starring in the Broadway revival of The Normal Heart and doing an interview with The New York Times.
‘(Reporter) Patrick Healy — and I just love this — he just (asked a question, beginning with), “As a gay man…” and I was kind of thrilled. He finally just took the information that I’d presented in front of him, and everyone, and just talked about it.’
‘My recollection was hearing the question pretty calmly. That was where I found the peace about it, actually. If it’s going to be talked about that’s exactly how it should be talked about. Just something else to mention.’

Jim, seems like a very grounded guy. I’m very glad that he is able to have a successful career, and a successful relationship as well.
