Tony winner Jennifer Holliday teams with the Gay Mens Chorus of LA this weekend!
I’m going to wrest myself away from the LA Fim Festival (I’ve seen seven films so far this week!) tomorrow night to attend the Gay Mens Chorus of LA’s summer concert: Broadway!
I wouldn’t miss it under any circumstances but this year there is extra incentive: Jennifer Holliday! Yup, the Tony winning star of the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls wll be performing during two of the weekend’s three concerts.
Holliday’s signature number, And I’m Teling You (I’m Not Going) has been a showstopper whenever she sings it. The many ardent fans of the two-time Grammy winner have remained faithful to her for more than two decades since her first performance in Dreamgirls.
Broadway! will consist of both classic and recent musical numbers that have defined the boards of the Great White Way. Including contemporary numbers from The Lion King, Young Frankenstein, Spring Awakening, Aida, as well as classic Broadway hits such as The King & I, Zorba, Milk and Honey, South Pacific, Company, Passion, Follies, Steel Pier, and, of course, Dreamgirls!
Holliday has become the darling of gay men’s choruses, having performed gigs in San Francisco, Seattle and now L.A.
For the L.A. gigs, the chorus has asked Holliday to perform songs from the Dreamgirls score with them. “I understood it as a Broadway revue, so we might as well do the stuff from Dreamgirls,” she says in the current issue of Fronteirs IN LA.
The show will be held at the Alex Theatre in Glendale Saturday at 3pm (no Holliday appearance at that show) and 8pm Sunday, June 28th at 3pm. Jennifer will also appear at the VIP reception following Sunday’s performance.
Tickets are $30 (general) at 818-243-ALEX (2539) or $100 (VIP) by calling 323-467-9741 or www.gmcla.org
