It’s Zachary Quinto vs. George Takei over Sulu being gay in newest ‘Star TRrek’ movie

Zachary Quinto wishes George Takei felt differently.

The Star Trek icon, who played the role of Sulu in the original TV series and films, is not pleased the character is revealed to be gay in Star Trek Beyond.

‘I was disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed,’ says Quinto, who has Spock in the last three feature films and, like Takei, is openly gay.

He tells The Hollywood Reporter he is disappointed in ‘any member of the LGBT community that takes issue with the normalized and positive portrayal of members of our community in Hollywood and in mainstream blockbuster cinema.’

‘I get it that he has had his own personal journey and has his own personal relationship with this character but, you know, as we established in the first Star Trek film in 2009, we’ve created an alternate universe, and my hope is that eventually George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response from especially young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our societies across the world, and should be.’

Takei had said the move was ‘really unfortunate’ and said his previous concerns to the director and writers were ignored.

  1. Perhaps Mr. Takei should plead the onset of dementia.

I am surprised and troubled that George raises this concern….curious as to his reasoning??

  3. I think it is awesome that Sulu is gay in the new movie, but it would have been more daring to make Kirk bisexual.

  4. Takei is absolutey right…

I guess it’s damned if you do and damned if you don’t. It’s a new and younger team that’s running the Star Trek franchise now. It’s also an alternate take with an alternate universe, so I don’t have any issue with them changing the character. It’s done all the time with a lots of franchises. As William Shatner would say to the Trekkies GET A LIFE!

  6. @Jake-Why?

  7. It’s about bloody time we had a gay character on Star Trek. Not sure why George is bent out of shape about this. Honestly I thought he would be nothing but supportive.

@FAEN – I agree. It’s been a gayless Star Trek universe for far too long and for a show like Star Trek I’m surprised they didn’t do it sooner. I have to agree with Simon Pegg that introducing a new character as gay wouldn’t have worked as well as having a pre-existing character be gay. New characters are more likely to be eliminated than the core characters and knowing studio heads, they would’ve killed off said new gay character easily vs. unlikely killing off a core character. But that’s just my opinion.
