Is Michael Sam’s football career over?
I don’t know what is going is going on with Michael Sam right now but it can’t be good.
He walked away from Montreal Alouettes training camp over the weekend and you have to wonder if he is walking away from football forever.
That’s the opinion of the general manager of Canadian Football League team which has now officially put Sam on its suspended list.
‘I’m surprised he left. I was very surprised,’ Jim Popp tells The Montreal Gazette.
‘If he doesn’t come back, I would think football’s over for him. He’s the one that has to face that. But I don’t think he doesn’t want to play football. That’s why he came here.’
Sam, 25, was signed by the CFL team last month after it became clear that he was not going to be drafted by an NFL team for their upcoming season.
Last year, Sam made history as the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team when he was signed by the St. Louis Rams. He was cut by The Rams after the pre-season then signed by the Dallas Cowboys for their practice squad but cut a month later.
Sam continued to speak of his continued desire to play pro football as his celebrity grew. He participated in Dancing With the Stars earlier this season and was also the subject of a documentary that aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Sam has yet to make any kind of public statement about his CFL departure and team management is able to shed little light.
‘There’s nothing to tell you,’ Popp says. ‘He wanted to go home, and that’s what he did. I don’t know why. When a guy wants to go home, they go home. He had some personal things to take care of. I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns.’
‘It’s a huge story because everybody keeps hounding and hounding and hounding. Michael Sam just wants to be a football player,’ Popp adds.
‘I would think anybody that’s 25 years old that has been going through it for a year and a half, it would have to affect him. I would think so. That’s one reason he didn’t want to do interviews and just concentrate on football.’

James says:
If it’s over, it’s over. I really wish Michael and his fiance, Vito Cammisano, the best. I think Michael was really just a little too ahead of his time.
FAEN says:
I hope he and Vito are ok. No one knows how the strain and publicity have affected them. The NFL say they’re gay friendly but the reality is a lot of that organization isn’t and as a result of this the next gay player will stay in the closet until he has a contract or stay in until his playing career is over. I hope it’s the former and not the latter.
David says:
The image of him twerking on Dancing with the Stars probably didn’t impress a lot of the NFL.
Kyle says:
Or maybe the culture of Montreal didn’t fit well.. unfortunately, some French Canadians can make it rough on non french speakers.
