How will Andrew Rannells differ from Neil Patrick Harris on Broadway in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”?
Neil Patrick Harris will complete his Tony Award winning run as a transgender rocker in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Sunday with Andrew Rannells stepping into the role three days later.
Will there be a big difference?
The author of the show’s book, John Cameron Mitchell, thinks there might be.
Mitchell, who played the title role in the film version that he also wrote and directed, describes Rannells as ‘so ebullient and he’s so sweet, everyone loves working with him.
‘I just think there’s going to be maybe a warmer and fuzzier Hedwig which is an interesting juxtaposition because she’s a mean bitch,’ he tells TheatreMania. ‘Perhaps that tone of happy while destroying someone.’
‘There’s something about his youthful ebullience that’s going to be different from Neil who’s almost kind of like a mean goth girl,’ he adds.
Tony winner Lena Hall is staying with the show and also wonders how different things will be.
‘It’s going to be really hard to say goodbye to Neil,’ she says. ‘We’re really crass with each other. I hope that Andrew is open to that kind of not caring, that kind of crassness.’
