His sitcom cancelled, Kelsey Grammer is headed to Broadway to star in La Cage aux Folles
After all those years of having the golden touch playing Fraser Crane on the long-running sitcom classics Cheers and Frasier,. Kelsey Grammer has starred in two short-lived sitcoms in three years.
His most recent effort, Hank on ABC, was one of the first new shows of the season to get the ax.
The the multiple Emmy winner is quickly bouncing back by heading to Broadway to star in a revival of La Cage aux Folles.
According to the New York Post, Grammer will play Georges in the revival which will open in April at the Longacre.
He’ll co-star with British actor Douglas Hodge who will play Albin, a high-strung drag queen and Georges’ longtime lover.
The production will arrive in New York by way of London, where both it and Hodge received rave reviews. The Post reports that Because Hodge is unknown in the US, the producers needed a star to play opposite him. Broadway veteran Mandy Patinkin was first offered the role but he decided to star in the new Hal Prince musical Paradise Found.

My personal opinion of Grammer in “LaCage” – bad choice. He has lost his golden touch and I don’t see people lining up for tickets. The show was revived in NYC several years ago(that was when Robert Goulet took over Daniel Davis’ role) to less than stellar reviews Patinkin would have been fabulous and anyone who had seen his star turn in “Evita” would agree. Months ago, I had read that John Barrowman” was being considered for the role of Albin. I wonder what happened.
