Highlights of Oprah’s interview w/Diana Nyad

I was going to post just a few clips of Oprah Winfrey’s interview with marathon swimmer Diana Nyad but they were all so good that I kept adding more and more snippets.

It’s interesting because as inspiring and accomplished as Oprah is, Nyad really is the one who shines here. What an amazing human being.

Watch the first clip and my hunch is you will watch another then another. Much of the attention given to this interview has been the part about Nyad saying she’s an atheist and Oprah seemingly challenging her on that.

But there’s so much more here that is even more fascinating.

One Remark

  1. With all due respect, Oprah seemed obsessed with challenging Diana’s views regarding her belief system. It’s fine that people like Oprah believe in a mythology that others might not believe in, even though it’s irritating to me when she says something like “God isn’t a bearded old man”, as if denying the cliche somehow makes the underlying myth true. We get it, Oprah, you think the universe is wondrous because unicorns and virgins and stuff. But there are a lot of us who think the universe is wondrous because it’s wondrous; no magic puppets, no last minute sacrifices, no bizarre backstory.

A lot of us admire the beauty of the universe without having to diminish it by giving credit to some mythical creation, bearded or not. Oprah’s insistence that Diana’s faith and admiration of nature must be construed as being Christian in nature made me like Oprah less. I am an atheist and I am constantly astounded by how wondrous the world is. I don’t believe some magical god gave birth to it. I appreciate it for what it is, and I feel sorry for those people who have to make up elaborate stories to justify what normal people know without asking, that this world is amazing and it has nothing to do with fairy tales.
