Harvey Milk among those honored by the California Hall of Fame – will special day be next?

Harvey MilkLet’s face it, if California wants to honor the late civil rights leader Harvey Milk properly, then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would sign a bill proclaiming every May 22 as Harvey Milk Day.

The bill passed the state legislature last year and was vetoed by the governor. Since then, the movie Milk has raised awareness of the life of this great man who put the dream of equal rights within reach for all and encouraged lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens to live their lives openly.

If Arnold vetoes this again, I will be forever disgusted with him – more than I already am.

President Barack Obama has disappointed the LGBT community a great deal since taking office but at least he had the good sense to honor Milk recently with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Okay, I’m burying the lede here: It was announced today that Milk is among those being honored by the California Hall of Fame. Others include Carol Burnett, Rafer Johnson and George Lucas.

Let’s hope it’s just an appetizer for the signing into law of Harvey Milk Day.

One Remark

  1. Greg – I couldn’t agree more.

Governor Schwarzenegger is calling for people to give him their feedback on the Harvey Milk Day bill. If he hears from a lot of supporters, he’ll be much less likely to veto.

There are a few ways to tell the Governor you support the bill:
-Tweet @schwarzenegger and ask him to pass the bill.
-Call 916-445-2841 and follow the prompts to express support for the Harvey Milk Day bill (SB 572). You won’t have to speak to anyone; all you’ll have to do is press buttons.
-Sign Equality California’s petition at http://www.eqca.org/harveymilkday.

Please, drop the Governor a line if you want California to help this bill to pass. Harvey Milk left a great legacy behind. Imagine how exciting it would be to have California recognize it!
