Happy Birthday to Tyne Daly!
This great star of stage and television turns 64 years old today.
Tyne Daly is a real showbiz trouper who has the talent and the creativity to keep working decade after decade. Of course she’s best known for her role as Mary Beth Lacey on Cagney & Lacey, a role that won her four Emmys.
She hit the Broadway stage after the series completed its six season run as Mama Rose in a revival of Gypsy winning the Tony Award for best lead actress in a musical. She returned to television for the two season run of Christy and won another Emmy then settled in for a six season run as Maxine Gray on Judging Amy, a role that won her a sixth career Emmy.
Post-Amy, she returned to Broadway and was Tony nominated in 2006 for the play Rabbit Hole. Most recently, Miss Daly has been touring with a well-received cabaret show and re-teamed with Cagney & Lacey co-star Sharon Gless for an episode of Gless’s current series Burn Notice.
During a conference call last month promoting the Burn Notice episode Daly said: “When I finished Judging Amy, I was ready to take some time to be in a kind of theater where you’re in the same room as your audience. So, you know, musical theater, legitimate theater, cabaret all have to do with being with your audience at the same time and not being on film. When I tire of this we’ll see if anybody wants to ever take my picture again.”
