Happy Birthday to Bryan Batt!

http://gayguidetoronto.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/BryanBatt.gifWe sure missed Bryan Batt’s character of Salvatore Romano on AMC’s Emmy winning Mad Men after he was written out midseason.

Sadly it seems that Sal won’t be back but I’m sure that the talented Bryan, who turns 47 today, will continue to thrive.

Sal might have been closeted on Mad Men but Bryan is an out and proud gay man. He’s had tremendous success on stage with major roles in such shows as Sunset Boulevard, Saturday Night Fever and La Cage aux Folles and in the films Jeffrey and Kiss Me Guido.

I’ve interviewed Bryan several times, most recently in January at the BAFTA/LA Tea Party in Beverly Hills.  He told me that  he had completed a memoir She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother that comes out in Msy.

“It’s about my mom, it’s about growing up in New Orleans and our wonderful relationship,” he explained. “She’s just this incredible, inspiring Steel Magnolia. It’s funny and it’s heartwarming and it’s basically true… I started this before Mad Men but I think Mad Men pushed the envelope.”

Don’t get writing out Sal. So much could have gone on with his character in revealing gay history in the 60’s. Write him out of the office, but continue the story line. Draper could have kept contact as a friend with a secret. Too bad for short sightedness!
