Hapless NBC cancels LAPD drama “Southland”

Okay, i know this isn’t as shocking as President Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (yeah, that really happened) but it’s still a stunner: last-place NBC has canceled its cop drama Southland even before it had its season premiere.
This was not only a good show that starred the appealing Ben McKenzie and the always terrific Regina King, but it also had a prominent gay character of officer John Cooper played by Michael Cudlitz.
I do not get this whatsoever.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the show, which premiered last spring, was going to air on Friday nights and set to start its second season Oct. 23. It is not clear when or if the six produced new episodes of Southland will air but hey, we get Dateline NBC instead! Yipee.
The series is from producer John Wells who gave NBC ER and The West Wing. It will now be shopped to broadcast and cable networks.
“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success,” Wells told THR. “We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”
Let’s hope it finds one. I would definitely watch.

Ugh. NBC sucks…Southland was awesome. Pretty soon it’s going to be three hours of Jay Leno every night. Lame.
Branden says:
I read the news on AfterElton.com. I was shocked! There is a twitter campaign to bring Southland back on the air in any capacity.
Elizaria says:
I think NBC made a crap move by killing Southland, and I really hope someone else will pick it up and put it in a timeslot where it can show off to it’s absolute advantage. Southland is a great show and I want it back on my tv! NBC – I could care less about.
Lola says:
NBC is stupid. Completely moronic. Why not give it a shot in that timeslot? What did they have to lose? Southland is a great show. NBC deserves to be in last place if this is the kind of bright decision making they have going on there. They took a huge gamble on Leno and it didn’t pay off and now an excellent scripted drama is paying the price. Jay Leno sucks. NBC sucks.

NBC sucks! This was my favorite show!

This NEEDS to be picked up by a network that appreciate what quality drama is, well written and acted. Makes me sad to see what NBC have done.
Don’t want it to end.
Hopsko says:
I love Southland! NBC’s shows suck right now and Southland would of made NBC so much better. Some network needs to pick Southland up its an amazing show and any network would be lucky to have it. I would definately follow this show on whatever network picks it up.
Tori says:
I cannot believe NBC’s canceling Southland (although maybe I should given its drastic decline in the past few years). Southland is the first NBC show in ages I’ve both enjoyed and respected. It’s dark and gritty, yes, but most people I know happen to like that and more importantly, Southland did it WELL. It’s a unique, well-written, realistic show that deserves to be shown somewhere; I will definitely follow whatever network shows it. Now, the only thing I watch on NBC is Law & Order, thanks Jay Leno.
Kate says:
I’ll take Southland any day over Leno. It’s a beautifully-imagined, smart drama that took their veiwership inside people’s lives without playing to any stereotypes I could see. I really loved and appreciated this show and I feel that NBC would rather ignore intelligence in favor of quick cash. A payout over the long run just isn’t worth it to them, it seems.
no_detective says:
Southland is not easy popcorn viewing – it’s quality drama which requires time to build an audience. I found it incredibly refreshing in its authenticity, intelligent performances, avoidance of stereotypes (Michael Cudlitz’s character included) and organic intensity. We’re talking EXCELLENT television here.
I really hope another network (with more brains than NBC) will pick it up. I’d boycott NBC, but there’s nothing on that channel I’d care to watch anymore.
