‘Gypsy’ with Barbra Streisand is on again!

It looks like Barbra Streisand will be playing Mama Rose in a big screen version of Gypsy after all.

STX Entertainment has taken over the project with plans to begin production in the fall, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Universal Pictures, which had been developing the remake for years, dropped out last fall and a new home for it was needed.

This time, Barry Levinson (Rainman) is attached to direct Streisand in the iconic role originated by Ethel Merman on Broadway more than 50 years ago.

Streisand, 73, has also starred in the movie musicals Funny Girl Hello, Dolly!, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Funny Lady, A Star is Born and Yentl.

Gypsy is seen as an ideal bookend to her movie career which was launched with her Oscar-winning performance in Funny Girl in 1968.

Her most recent film was 2012’s The Guilt Trip opposite Seth Rogen.

Mama Rose is considered one of the plum musical roles for an actress with such show-stopping numbers as Rose’s Turn, Everything’s Coming Up Roses and Some People.

Merman’s original Broadway version was followed by revivals starring Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone.

Merman was passed over for the first feature film version in favor of Rosalind Russell whose biggest numbers were dubbed by Lisa Kirk.

Bette Midler played the role in a three-hour TV version for CBS in 1993, was nominated for an Emmy and won a Golden Globe.
