Gus Kenworthy wins two medals at X Games and boyfriend Matthew Wilkas gets IDd on ESPN

Gayby star Matthew Wilkas was on hand in Aspen over the weekend to watch his boyfriend, Gus Kenworthy, win two silver medals at the X-Games.
ESPN was broadcasting the event and clearly identified Wilkas as Kenworthy’s boyfriend in the graphics after the freeskier had what he described ‘honestly the best run I’ve ever done.’
Kenworthy, who came out publicly last fall, was emotional in his post-race interview with ESPN and his voice broke as he said: ‘I’m just feeling good this year. I’m just happy. Got a big weight off my shoulders, and oh my God I’m emotional.’
The last time ESPN showed a gay male athlete and his boyfriend on camera it caused a bit of a furor. It was on the day in 2014 when Michael Sam was drafted by the NFL’s St. Louis Rams and kissed boyfriend Vito Cammisano on the lips while on live television.
Scandal! Some people just could not handle it.
Anyway, after the race, Kenworthy talked to Rolling Stone about having his boyfriend identified for viewers: ‘Everyone I looked up to growing up, they would show their girlfriend on TV … I was just kind of bummed that it was something that I’d never have. I felt like I was never going to be confident and authentic and introduce someone as my boyfriend to the reporters and have him on TV.
‘It was really special to want to do that and be happy about it. It was amazing. I looked up at the screen and saw Matt at the bottom. And it was touching being there with my mom, my boyfriend and my agent – my little support team.’
