Greg’s Weekend Tip: See outstanding documentary “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” at NOHO 7

I had the absolute privilege of meeting and interviewing Dennis Shepard – the father of Matthew Shepard – yesterday and was just so deeply moved and impressed by him.

It’s been nearly 17 years since his beautiful son was brutally murdered in an anti-gay hate crime.

I will be posting my interview with Dennis on Monday both here and over at Gay Star News.

But in the meantime, if you are in LA, I hope you will head over to North Hollywood to see the first-rate documentary Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine directed by Michele Josue who I also interviewed yesterday.

Matt and Michele went to high school together overseas and the connection was deep. If you think you know all about Matthew Shepard already, trust me, you don’t.

There are interviews with Matt’s circle of friends who have never spoken out before, there are photos and videos we’ve never seen before, and there are journals entries that let us in to Matt’s life in such touching way. He becomes more than a symbol, we see that he was a young gay man who had suffered but who was finding his way as he headed to his 22nd birthday.

It’s a beautiful, rich and welcomed portrait that you will not want to miss.

The film opened yesterday at Laemmle NoHo 7. Meant to post this yesterday but hope it will get plenty of you to go see it and let me know what you think.
