Greg in the Afternoon: “Do you know Roger Federer?”

Hi all, sorry for the lack of posts today but I am in Palm Springs and enjoying just a wee bit of a holiday at the La Dolce Vita Spa and Resort.

There’s guys here from Canada, the East Coast, and even Switzerland. That leads to my very embarrassing moment at the pool this afternoon. I’m chatting up some guys from Switzerland and actually ask one of them: “Do you know Roger Federer?” I wish I could say that I was drunk but I was not. Somehow, it just seemed logical to me.

Everyone laughed and the guy, his name was Sebastian (of course) said, “Yes, I play tennis with him.”

Fair enough. BTW, Federer is from Switzerland and won the Olympic Gold Medal in doubles for his country last summer.

Speaking of Roger Federer, I am so rooting for him this year on the tennis tour. He’s in an interesting position. He’s the number two player in the world, has won the last five US Opens and five of the last six Wimbledon, and yet is widely perceived to be in a slump. He needs to win just one more major title to tie Pete Sampras’ record of 14 majors (US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open). It was announced just today that Federer will play in next week’s Monte Carlo Open in preparation for the French Open – the only major tournament he has never won. It’s not like he hasn’t come close: he’s been runner-up the past three years but keeps losing to the dude who OWNS the Paris tournament: Rafael Nadal.

My friend Henry is THE biggest Federer fan and for his sake, I hope Roger can bag a big title or two this year and add to his already historic record.

So, that’s about it for now. Palm Springs is completely lovely right now and the fact that this resort is about a block from my favorite restaurant (and Barry Manilow’s favorite) is a great bonus. It’s El Mirasol and the $8 double margarita is one of the great joys in life. I met one of my BFFs there, James,. yesterday and had some awesome chicken fajitas with spinach.

If you’re ever in town, you gotta try it!
