Golden Globes: Meryl Streep gets 28th nomination
Gee, you think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves Meryl Streep?
Earlier today, the acting goddess extended her own record when she received her 28th Golden Globe Award nomination – this time for best actress in a comedy or musical for August: Osage County.
Meryl already has eight Globes at home – more than anyone else in history.
She won three Globes early in her career for Kramer vs. Kramer, The French Lietenant’s Woman and Sophie’s Choice.
Then a long period of no wins. From 1983 until 2002, Meryl was nominated a whopping 12 times without a win. And these were choice roles including Out of Africa, A Cry in the Dark, Silkwood, Postcards From the Edge, Bridges of Madison County and One True Thing.
It seemed as if there was Streep fatigue, that she was so good in everything that there was some sort of backlash around awards time. Keep in mind she went 30 years between her second and third Oscar wins.
But it was the Globes that began to turn things around for Meryl and opened up the floodgates again when she won for supporting actress for Adaptation in 2002. She won again the next year for Angels in America then for The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Julie & Julia (2009) and The Iron Lady (2011). She was also nominated and lost during that stretch for Doubt, Mamma Mia, The Manchurian Candidate, It’s Complicated and Hope Springs.
Here is a link to the FULL LIST of 2014 Globe nominations and below are some of Meryl’s acceptance speeches.
